Promoting British Value

Since September 2014, the Department for Education has reinforced the need ‘to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.’
The Promoting British Values at St Mary's document explains how we address this need at St Mary’s. We and have a collection of the events and activities at St Mary’s where British values are promoted.

You can also look at what happened on our British Values Day, when the whole school was involved in exploring and developing these key values.

British Values Day (June 2016)

We spent a day celebrating British values across the school. These values are democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Everybody came to school dressed in the colours of our national flags and each class undertook activities to develop their understanding and celebrate these integral values. The highlight of the day was when the whole school took part in a ballot to vote for an animal to become our national symbol. There were hustings with campaign speeches by groups of year 4, 5 & 6 children, followed by a whole school vote.
