Values and Virtues

Gospel Values
There are 8 values, based on the Beatitudes in Matthew's Gospel and 4 Virtues. They are explored and practised every day in school, in order for every child and adult to be the best person they can be, following the teachings of Jesus.
  • Humility - seeing life as a gift
  • Compassion - having empathy
  • Kindness - caring for others
  • Justice - working for a fairer world
  • Forgiveness - reconciling with self and others
  • Integrity - do what you say
  • Peace - committed to peace making and non-violence
  • Courage - standing up for the truth
Catholic Virtues
The children have demonstrated huge awareness of the Gospel Values and these can be witnessed in all walks of school life. As part of developing their journey in Faith more deeply,  we have begun looking at virtues and how to become a better Christian - living our lives in the way Jesus would want

  • Prudence - forward thinking and developing positive habits
  • Temperance - showing honesty, compassion and kindness
  • Fortitude - persevering when things get tough.
  • Justice - seeking fairness in a good and just way.
Gospel values are the way in which we demonstrate the values which Jesus teaches us through the Gospels. "How we behave towards others.  " Virtues allow us not only to perform good acts, but to "give the best of yourself."
Gospel values are things which we display, virtues are what we develop spiritually.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”

At St Mary's we try to integrate these values into the liturgical and community life of the school.  In addition, we are also trying to incorporate them into the curriculum itself, so that we offer an education to our children ‘in the light of the Gospel’.  Weaving the values and virtues alongside an awareness of Catholic Social Teaching enables out whole school community to be aware of how we should strive to lives our lives and make an impact in the way we care for others and or common home.
